Pretty Boy and Goals

What? Only Sparklepeaches and TT42 can put pretty boys on their blogs?! I don't think so. I had an awesome day and me and Tom are celebrating. Do you know Tom? Tom Hardy? You should. He's handsome. Wuthering Heights. The 2009 Masterpiece Theatre depiction. Watch it. **whispers** It's streaming on Netflix.

Anyhoo... the goal today was to take a step toward query preparation. And edit. A lot. I did all that: two hours of research and study and clicking links on blogs (found a few potential agents too, oh yeah, uh huh!) Found all sorts of query examples and advice and such. Then I had two two-hour editing sessions, getting through 76 pages.

Thus, the mancandy on the blog and a movie on the tv. Fair eventide, Fearless Readers. Enjoy.

Has It Been Since Sunday?

Huh. I would have sworn I did a blog post like two days ago. How time flies.

I'm going full steam editing on Spiritcaster - getting it ready for sub. It's going so well. I think my friend Julia Knight has cured me of my evils. Sentences beginning with "It was" and "There were". Look for them and cull them. Mightily. Seriously. Go through and take that crap out. Simplest advice I've ever gotten, and it changed the landscape of my writing. You know how you read and read and read until you aren't reading it anymore, you're reciting in your head what you think you're saying? Well, I started looking for It was and There were and all of a sudden I saw through the familiarity to the garbage that I had written.

I had about 100 pages of utter crap where I was rewriting every other sentence for filtering or passive voice, and then all of a sudden it stopped sucking so bad. That got me nervous. It's like.. where did all the crap go? Have I lost the "sight" or did it just stop sucking? That's the rub, isn't it? I don't know about you, but I fall into these traps, where I lose train or track or voice, or something! and everything goes all passive and filtery. **shudders**

What about you? Any tricks or simple things you look for on the edit to clean things up? I'm all ears....

Ugh.

Well. I have admitted it. In the yearly goals list, I have my first fail. I did not finish The Horses of Valdor. Frankly, my dears (by my dears I mean you, Fearless Readers!) I got bored. Bored to death. Not a good sign. So, I coasted the last few days and did... very little. For now, the Horses of Valdor is in the trunk. I don't know why it no longer works. I don't know if I broke it, or it was broke before I began. Regardless, the real project, the one I know has a future, is Spiritcaster.

I've heard back from my wonderful betas, and I'm going through their responses one at a time. I found plenty of other things to fix along the way. All of a sudden filtering and unnecessarily clunky phrases are just jumping out at me. And fantasy speak. Oh, the source of all that is purple! Begone lilac! Speak like a human, not a character in a bad Tolkien rip off!

The next phase, and the one that frightens me the most, is the query portion of our program. **shudders** I'm going to try and do it in small bites. This week, I'm going to get the "elevator pitch" down. Like most writers, it is very hard for me to boil my story down to its base chemicals. I just don't know what to include and how to get all the good stuff in without a bunch of run-on sentences or sounding like a fool. I swear, I'm never going to write another book without having the elevator pitch done FIRST.

Another Sporadic Update on the Blog

I shan't bore you, Fearless Readers, with the particulars, but this weekend was made of suck. And now it's over. Which sucks slightly more. Oh well... I am up over 50K on the edits. I started with about 285 pages, only had chapter breaks for the first four chapters, and I've cut it down to 270 or so pages. Lots and lots of cuts. A lot of cuts, considering I'm at about 17 chapters now. I was really hoping to have been done by now, but this last week or so hasn't been so great, and my work ethic has really fallen off. I'm determined to get back on my roll.

The good news is, the betas are rolling in, and no one has said that my mother is a hamster and my father smells of elderberries. In other words, I don't seem to suck. Which is a very nice thing to know.

I've also been scouring the back pages of the Netflix streaming movie pages, watching the most horrible gothic trash and romance. Thank God for the BBC, or I might have climbed up on a clock tower at some point. (No - that is not an ominous foreboding. Should something happen to me, AVENGE MY DEATH!!)

^^ (The above was me invoking gallows humor! Not a plea for help. Seriously!! You know me!)

Observation Sprinkles

How did a week go by so quickly?! And how did I get over 50 Fearless Readers?! Two interjectory, hypothetical questions!!

First, let me address the week and how quickly it went. I've been working on the Horses WIP, and it's going really well. I totally immersed myself in this story when I was writing it - it was only my second attempt at a novel length piece of fiction, after all. It was the first story I dreamed about, I mean literal dreams, where I went to visit my characters in my sleep. It's amazing how much I've grown as a writer. I mean, I am knocking down forests of adverbs and infodumps. I'm trimming purple prose with a hacksaw! I'm still loving it though.

And the Fearless Readers. I am so grateful I'm not throwing words out into a cold, dark blogosphere to wither and die. :) You are the little flickering lightening bugs in the night... like the ones that had a nest under my aunt's porch and used to get in the house and fly around in my room at night... and scare... me... ok, I'm gonna come up with another metaphor for what you are. But whatever you are, you are good! I like you very much!

Now, I keep a journal, and in that journal, I sometimes jot down things I've seen or heard or felt during the day. Here are a few snippets for your enjoyfulness.

"Guys across the courtyard that stand around and do nothing are doing so again tonight... but there's an urgency there, one I haven't seen before. I wonder if something is afoot... they seem to be waiting."

"A flash, no - a shadow! running down the street, only glimpses of it seen thru the trees and the knee wall blocking the sidewalk. Too fast for a biped. Was that movement behind my car?! Or just my imagination? Why do I think there is something in this feeling it gave me?!"

"The edges of my Dragongar-inspirational-building-pictures are starting to curl. Wonder if they are telling me it's time to take them down and find new buildings for these new stories...."

"Oh... the guys across the courtyard had pizza delivered. You might consider cutting down on the joe, Sherlock!"

I'd Post... but

I am too busy trembling in FEAR! OMG. Fearless Readers: I have sent the Spiritcaster off to the four hardy souls who have agreed to crack open its digital pages and scan what is therein. **Deep breath** This is the first time I've ever gotten to this step. I'ma nervous. And sort of proud. And wondering where I go and what I read to learn how to write a synopsis... or drown my sorrows if the thing is one big giant mistake. :)

Oh, and I entered a Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes. You know. Cuz writing is the only job I would continue to do if I won Ten Million Dollars. And I figure the pressure of waiting to see if I win Ten Million Dollars will take my mind off the stress of waiting for betas!

So, I'm on track for my yearly goals. I didn't start the rewrite/finishing of Rabid Horses of Valdor on this day (I'm gonna work on that name, by the way - less melodramatic). But I have a three day weekend due to some scheduling changes at work, and I shall apply myself to having two - two hour writing sessions each day. I should make some serious headway. Oh, and watch The Proposal on Netflix again. I like Scarlet Johanson's hubby very much. That is all.

How I Survived the Apocolypse

I was online when the horror began... then, the sudden flash, snap crackle pop and all was night. It was like a sheet of darkness descended down around me, turning the familiar shapes of my apartment into black mysteries, potential dangers. Screams from outside filtered through the windows (the kids were playing kickball on the common). It was dangerous, but I had to look. I had to know.

It wasn’t just me. The lights were out all over the complex, and a voice cried out, “The lights across the street are out, too!” So now I knew. It was all of us. This meant no quick fix. No throwing a switch at the electrical box. No internet. No lights. No TV. Hard times. But what had caused it all? Was this a plague, a virus? Had millions disappeared or died without the rest of us knowing? Was it... zombies? Vampires? A serial killer? I could only hope he would start at the end of the block.

I took a look around the apartment. There was a lot to think about. I live in a studio so the only way out is the windows or the door. There would be no basement defense when the shit started to go down. No attic to hide in to weather the storm. No wood and nails to board up the windows. If worse came to worse, my only hope was the bathroom. But first, I needed the thing we all crave in the dark. Light.

I remembered where I had left my purse and shuffled to it on my hands and knees. My cat sensed my weakness and began attacking. All I could do was scream "Hwagu shiggam getthefukoffme!" and hope it didn't draw danger. With the light of my ipod, I fished out the last remaining scented candles, left over from the cold and dark of winter. Thank God the Duraflame candle lighters were there in the same drawer. Light acquired, my thoughts drifted to food.

The light of an ipod is cold and harsh and when it falls on an object, it makes a cruel shadow. But there, next to my purse (which I have tripped over twice in the search for the candles) is a grocery bag. Inside that grocery bag is an apocalypse survivors holy grail. Two bars of chocolate, a box of graham crackers and a packet of Safeway brand marshmallows. All I had was the flickering flame of a vanilla mist candle and gooey, candle toasted s’mores to keep my hope alive.

Hey. I’m no hero. I’m just one of the lucky ones. I had gone to the store and seen Hershey bars on sale. I meant to warm the marshmallows in the microwave, but there’s no microwaves during the apocalypse. So, I sat down in the light of those candles, my chocolate broken up and ready for the graham crackers, and watched the only movie on my ipod. Zombieland. A cruel irony, or a sign from the Gods? Convinced I was living in the endtimes, I sat down to soak up the lessons to be learned from other survivors and waited for the screams to begin... again, hoping it would start at the end of the block.

Five long hours later, the lights came on to general hooting and hollering across the complex. It was too dark for the kids to continue their game, too late to go out and count the survivors by the glow of lights in the apartments. Once again, irony won the day as I turned off all the lights that had come back on and slipped into bed, the red glow of my am/fm clock radio like a beacon in the night. Till next time, apocalypse. Till next time.
