Day 15: Halfway Point

So, it was easy coming up with a blog post idea on day 15 of NaNoWriMo. It's Halfway Day! I have achieved a startling 42,572 words in that short period of time. I don't mean to sound like a bragasaurus, but I am really proud of myself. Considering the shit work ethic I've had over the last year and a half or so, I feel like I'm pretty much on top of the world right now. I hope you will realize this is just my natural enthusiasm and childlike delight. It will soon slough away and leave me in a trench of despair, so I tend to ride these "I'm awesome" highs for as long as I can.

I'm getting worried about length. I'm not anywhere near half-way through my ponderous outline. It didn't seem ponderous at the time, but now I think... this is getting ponderous. There's only been one moment between my girl and her eventual love interest. Things do get romantical later on, but it begins as a straight up gothic tale.

I'm not exactly where I want to be on word count. I hoped to be at 45k by now and I'm a little short. Also, getting 3k a day is taking a really long time. About 3 to 3-1/2 hours. I know I can write faster than that, but for some reason, I'm not. At least it doesn't feel like a chore. I have to admit that my writing sessions have usually been short - maybe 2 hours, 1 hr 45 minutes sometimes and I strive for 2k. I tend to have a short attention span, I guess.

Well - NaNo Onward! How are you doing? Where are you at in your own NaNo journey?

  1. You should be proud of yourself - that's wonderful progress! There are some days when it flows and some days when it's a struggle, eh? That's how it felt over the past 15 days for me, anyway. I hope your characters smooth the path for you. ;)

  2. That's fantastic! I find that writing in short bursts is better for me. Perhaps it is the extreme concentration that makes it difficult to write for long periods of time?

I'm only getting a few hundred words per day at the moment. I'm way behind on word count for NaNo and my personal goal. November should be interesting. I really want to have my draft finished - don't know if my fingers can hold out.

  3. Let's see if the new Java will let me post a replay on my own damn blog now.

  4. hmm... looks like it sort of will!
Wendy: yes - but it's always that way. One day I'm Hemingway, the next day I'm Dan Brown.

Jennifer: best of luck. I want to tell you to gogogog -b ut sometimes the body can only handle so much.

  5. Go ahead and boast, my fairy friend. You deserve it! (:wag:)

If you're at about 45k and about halfway through, that's about right for a romance novel, or a bit short for a fantasy. So don't worry about that.

With regards to it taking longer than you thought it would, I'm finding that I need to insert a lot of thinking time in between writing spurts, and even then my novel's not making that much sense. Editing's going to be a b*tch.

As for losing steam after NaNo, I'll keep you at it.

Now off to write some more. I'll never beat your word count by the time I report in on Sunday, but at least I won't get totally whupped. And I'm gonna check my total word count before I report, and if I'm at 9995 again, I'm gonna write those extra five words first. :D

  6. Yeah... I just realized I'm done with 2 out of 7 pages of the outline. so it's lookin' like I'd be at 140k if I keep at this pace. So... that's not halfway! EEEP!

Get on with your bad self, Ruth! :)
