Editing: She Begins

Greetings all! I have not fallen from the face of the earth, I have been lazy as hell and took approximately a month to do a synopsis on each novel. Albeit, these "synopsis" are each 29 pages long (single spaced). I really needed these as maps of the plot and exciting happenings... and I have many changes and fixes to make. It starts today.

I must be ill. Someone, call a doctor. I am a self-avowed night owl and long suffering insomniac... but I'm up at 6:30 A.M. on a SATURDAY, writing a blog entry, preparing my fountain pens (with purple ink), about to go to my car to go acquire a sweet delicious coffee drink and return, with coffee drink and two, count 'em, two printed manuscripts retrieved from the trunk of my car. Yes. Two printed manuscripts. The last year and eight months of work. 999 pages. I haven't held a printed manuscript in my hand for over a year. I am loathe to print them out, because as soon as I do, I make a change to the computer copy and then the printed copy is just toilet paper. Sigh. There is just something about seeing the physical manifestation of all your work, your worry, your obsession, your ever-present concern belched forth from the belly of an HP 8100 onto smooth clean ... previously used... white and yellow paper (hey, it's scratch and it's free) and it's waiting for me to edit.

I go forth.

Wish me luck.

And thank you all for waiting.

  1. Oooh, I love printed copies. Absolutely nothing like that feeling, and I swear by them for editing. I actually do it from my local Kinkos: simple binding makes it easier to handle, and it's really not that much more expensive than the ink and paper expended.

  2. Good luck, sweetie! :-)

I'm the same with printing. I love seeing my work in the flesh, but I'm loathed to waste paper and ink. The next thing I print out will be printed on the back of an old novella draft. :)

  3. Yes, Lindsey, good idea about Kinko's, but I do it at work. We have a mega massive HP printer that can print about 100,00 sheets before running out of ink, so I don't feel bad about printing there since I re-use old scratch paper... so no monies there!

Adam! Enjoy the printage.. stroke the smooth, warm paper... :)
    hugs!

  4. I feel your pain! I had the worst night sleep last night but I dragged myself out of bed at 7am on a Sunday!

Good luck with the editing. Now, if only I could get out of blogland and do some of my own.

Don't worry, I do the same thing. My husband works in the public service so he prints out my ms with his fancy laser printer at work. Hey, why else do I pay taxes?

  5. Ha! I am not the only one! And I don't feel bad about it - the paper would just go in the trash. And you will see I winge about my sleeping all the time... I am a perpetual insomniac.

  6. Oooh, wow. If I had that kind of resource, I would use it. :-) Versus my home printer would kill me if I tried to run off that much.

  7. It's faster and easier to edit on paper than the computer AND with the added bonus of getting a second edit when you sit down and change the computer file. :)

Congratulations on getting to the editing stage. :)
